PCIT Closing the Gap in Family Support

Every parent knows what it’s like to feel stuck. Maybe it’s the tantrums that seem to come out of nowhere, the daily battles over bedtime or getting dressed, or the quiet worry that you and your child just aren’t as connected as you used to be. For many families across Rhode Island, these struggles can feel isolating — but they don’t have to be faced alone.

At Family Service of Rhode Island, we’re proud to offer Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), an evidence-based treatment designed to help caregivers and young children rebuild trust, communication, and connection. PCIT is unique in the way it works: rather than meeting with a therapist alone, parents and caregivers are coached in real time, often through a discreet earpiece, while they interact and play with their child. This live, hands-on approach means there’s no guesswork involved. Parents don’t have to wait until the next session to figure out what to try — they get guidance in the moment, practice new skills immediately, and see the impact unfold right in front of them.

The results speak for themselves.

Families who complete PCIT often see meaningful reductions in disruptive behaviors like defiance, aggression, and meltdowns. But just as importantly, they walk away with a stronger, warmer relationship — the kind that doesn’t disappear once treatment ends. The skills caregivers build in PCIT become part of how they parent moving forward, shaping calmer households and more secure, trusting relationships between parents and children for years to come.

What makes this work especially important right now is access. FSRI is proud to be one of only nonprofit organization offering PCIT in the entire state of Rhode Island. For families who have heard about this therapy or have been searching for support that truly meets their child’s needs, that scarcity can make all the difference between finding help and continuing to struggle in silence. We believe every family deserves access to care that works, and being one of the few organizations equipped to provide PCIT locally is both a responsibility and a privilege we take seriously.

PCIT is built for young children, typically between the ages of 12-36 months and 2-6.5 years old who are navigating behavioral challenges, along with the caregivers raising them. Whether you’re parenting solo, co-parenting, fostering, or raising grandchildren, this program is designed to meet your family where you are. And seeking support isn’t a sign that something is wrong with your child or that you’ve failed as a parent — it’s a sign of strength. Behavior is often a child’s way of communicating something they don’t yet have the words for, and PCIT gives families the tools to understand that communication and respond to it with confidence.

If your family has been navigating hard days, difficult routines, or a relationship with your child that doesn’t feel like it used to, know that help is closer than you might think. As one of just two PCIT providers in Rhode Island, Family Service of Rhode Island is here to walk alongside your family, every step of the way.
