Lucy’s Hearth, located in Middletown, Rhode Island serves homeless mothers and their children through an emergency shelter program, a transitional apartment program, a permanent apartment program and an outreach and aftercare program.
Lucy's Hearth primarily serves Newport County, Rhode Island residents, but warmly welcomes residents from other areas of the state when beds are available.
From Homelessness to Self-Sufficiency
Lucy's Hearth's mission is: To provide comprehensive programs and services to homeless families in a safe, supportive environment that promotes family health and stability and increases self-sufficiency in order to achieve permanent, affordable housing.
Profile of Residents
Most of the mothers served are in their late 20s, and the children are newborns to 18 year olds. Some residents have histories of homelessness and are at high-risk of becoming homeless once again. The causes for the residents’ homelessness include economic hardship, inability to find affordable housing, eviction, family crisis, separation and divorce.
Lucy's Hearth was incorporated in 1984 and opened as an overnight shelter with one staff person, a budget of only $20,000, and a dedicated group of volunteers.
As the need for shelter increased, it became a 24-hour shelter and expanded its programs and services to address the many issues faced by homeless women with children. In 2007, Lucy’s Hearth became an affiliate of Family Service of Rhode Island but continues as a separate 501 (c) (3) corporation with a board of directors.
In 2011 the shelter, for the first time in its history, was accredited by the Council on Accreditation.
