Family Service of Rhode Island was one of the first organizations in the state to address HIV/AIDS.
As part of this work our board of directors and staff in the 1980s helped create AIDS Project RI, which, in June 2008, became a division of Family Service of Rhode Island.
Today we provide an array of HIV/AIDS programs including mental health and substance abuse counseling, and home based case management.
We also offer affordable apartments for people living with HIV/AIDS in partnership with AIDS Care Ocean State.
Also--the Afia Center for Health and Wholeness, which offers drop-in group counseling, nutritional counseling, basic needs assistance, a hot meal, and social, spiritual and recreational opportunities for adults living with HIV/AIDS. The Afia Center is made possible through a collaboration with the Mathewson Street Church in downtown Providence, and is located in the church facility.
Also, with the Miriam Hospital we developed an award-winning program helping persons with Hepatitis C and HIV/AIDS receive life-saving Interferon. Presented at the National Institutes of Health, this program is nationally shaping best practice standards for treating co-infected persons. |
