Westerly Integrated Social Services Program (WISSP)

At Westerly High School, Family Service of Rhode Island provides mental health professionals at WISSP, along with other partners such as South County Community Action, South Shore Mental Health and the University of Rhode Island.

In the Newport Area

We've opened an office at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center in Newport, Rhode Island to help families in crisis on Aquidneck Island access services.  In addition, we have a small office at the Florence Gray Center in Newport, thanks to a partnership with the Newport Housing Authority.  The office serves people living at the site of the former Tonomy Hill public housing complex, which has been renovated and renamed Newport Heights.

In addition, we have a partnership with Lucy's Hearth, the Newport County shelter for homeless women and their children.

On the Beat
Bilingual staff rides with Providence police to reach families before violence explodes and gets them help.  A similar program was created in 2007 in East Providence.

Providence Safe Start

Family Service of Rhode Island partners with the Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Rhode Island Family Court, the Providence Police Department and the Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth and Families to help children traumatized by violence.

In the Neighborhoods
Staff attends neighborhood meetings to help residents resolve problems and get needed services.

Planning Together
Staff participates in weekly Providence Police Command Conferences to intervene in neighborhoods before crises erupt.

Training
Staff trains new recruits at the Providence Police Academy and Camp Varnum, experienced officers in Sergeant's Class, and VISTA volunteers assigned to police substations.
