11/27/06 World AIDS Day Activities
Family Service of Rhode Island will mark World AIDS Day with activities at its HIV/AIDS drop-in center in Providence on Thursday, November 30.
“The theme of this year's event is remembering those lost, and learning from the experiences of those living with the disease,” said Margaret Holland McDuff, CEO of Family Service of Rhode Island, a non-profit human service agency.
“People infected are living longer, which is why the emphasis is not only remembrance of those departed but in helping those living with the disease to have opportunities to enjoy their lives.”
The activities will take place at the agency’s Afia Center, for people living with HIV and AIDS, located at the Mathewson Street Church, 134 Mathewson Street, Providence from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 30.
“We invite anyone living with this disease and those working in HIV/AIDS organizations to stop by and learn about the work of our Afia Center program,” she said. The Afia Center offers drop-in group counseling, nutritional counseling, basic needs assistance, a hot meal, and social, spiritual and recreational opportunities.
Tours of the Afia Center begin at 11 a.m. At noon the Michael Washor Band will perform. At 1 p.m. there will be a ceremony remembering those lost to the HIV/AIDS pandemic; 2 p.m. a buffet lunch; and at 3 p.m. entertainment by the Big Nazo Puppet Creature Stroll.
The activities were developed by Afia Center clients and agency staff.
