02/13/07 Agency Joins Community Leaders in Urging Installation of Smoke Detectors

Dr. Susan Erstling, a Family Service of Rhode Island vice president, joins (l-r) City Council Majority Leader Terrence Hassett, Mayor David Cicilline, and Assistant Fire Chief Michael Dillon at the Providence Public Safety Complex
Family Service of Rhode Island joined Providence Mayor David Cicilline and other city officials and organizations in urging Providence residents to take advantage of the city's free smoke detector program.
The smoke detector hotline for Providence is (401) 243-6034. The federally funded initiative supplies free smoke detectors and batteries to city residents with disabilities, to elderly residents and to persons who cannot afford to purchase the life saving devices.
Today's announcement, which took place at the Providence Public Safety Complex, was in the wake of a recent fire that resulted in two fatalities.
"This fatal fire struck at the heart of a Providence family and the entire community," said Mayor David Cicilline. "As we mourn the death of a father and his daughter, this tragedy compels us to do everything in our power to prevent this from happening again."
"It has been well established that smoke detectors save lives and we have the responsibility to ensure that every single resident has access to these critically important life saving devices," said Terrence Hassett, the city council's majority leader and a landlord in the city.
"These early warning devices go a long way towards ensuring that everyone gets out alive," said Assistant Fire Chief Michael Dillon.
