08/21/06 Red Sox Foundation Donates $5,000
The Red Sox Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Boston Red Sox, has donated $5,000 to non-profit Family Service of Rhode Island to support activities for youth living at the agency's "Quanacut House" program.
"We are grateful for this donation and for the Red Sox longtime support for the youngsters living in Quanacut House," said Margaret Holland McDuff, Family Service of Rhode Island CEO.
Quanacut House, located in East Providence, provides shelter and counseling for young boys who have suffered from abuse and neglect. She noted that the relationship between the Sox and the agency goes back three years.
In July, 2003, John Henry, the Red Sox principal owner, Red Sox Foundation executive director and team senior vice president of corporate affairs Meg Vaillancourt, executive vice president Dr. Charles Steinberg, a dozen Red Sox front office staff members, Wally the Green Monster and Paws from the Pawtucket Red Sox visited the group home, providing financial support and gifts.
The presents keep coming, and in January, the Boston Red Sox hitting coach, Ron “Papa Jack” Jackson, stopped by and gave the kids batting tips and gifts. The children are also guests of the Red Sox Foundation each year on Rhode Island Day at Fenway Park where they meet players and have a special role in starting the game.
“The Red Sox Foundation was created by our owners to help support programs that provide health, educational, recreational and social service programs for children and families in need across New England,” Vaillancourt said in announcing the grant.
“We saw firsthand the great work that Family Service of Rhode Island does at Quanacut House, and we are thrilled to have developed a strong relationship with the young children who live there. They hold a special place in Red Sox Nation and we encourage all of our fans to join us in support of the vital services provided by Family Service of Rhode Island.”
In recognition of their support, the Sox will be receiving the agency's Brighter Futures Award November 13 at the Rhode Island Convention Center. For more information about the event, call (401) 331-1350 ext. 3319 or visit www.familyserviceri.org.
