07/23/11 Realtor Makes "Movie" for Foster Kids

Julie Longtin and Ray Sirico of RE/MAX Cityside

Julie Longtin (pictured left with associate Ray Sirico) sees her RE/MAX Cityside office at 350 South Main Street, Providence as more than a place of business: it’s a community space, one that participates in Gallery Night in the city, and one that holds recruitment sessions for foster parents.

And now Ms. Longtin, a Cranston native, has made a “movie" (available on the agency's Facebook page) to encourage other businesses to recruit loving homes for foster children.

And she’s holding her second recruitment open house this year on Thursday, July 28 from 5 to 7 p.m.

“We need Julie’s help and help from everyone in the business community to spread the word to possible foster parents,” said Margaret Holland McDuff, Family Service of RI CEO.

So Julie agreed to shoot a brief “imovie” for Family Service of Rhode Island.  “We shot it with one of those ‘flip cameras’ right in the office,” Ms. Longtin said.” My daughter held a cue card with some of the script, and it took us about 7 or 8 takes. I messed up my lines a few times, and sometimes a truck or car driving by or other noise interfered with a ‘take,’ but we got it done!”

Stephen Hug from Family Service of RI did the videotaping, later producing it using Apple’s imovie software and uploading it to Family Service of RI’s Facebook page.

Ms. Longtin hopes the video encourages other businesses to hold sessions for their employees and others in the community to consider foster parenting.

“Maybe we can’t all be foster parents, but we can help spread the word to those who can,” she said.  “It takes special people to become foster parents and my goal is to connect those people with Family Service of Rhode Island’s foster care office.”

Ms. Longtin has received numerous awards and is most proud of being the youngest woman inducted into the RE/MAX Hall of Fame in 2004.  She has been a licensed real estate salesperson since 1991 and was also a licensed real estate appraiser from 1994-1999.

“I think my education at St. Mary’s Bay View Academy particularly helped me understand the importance of community service,” she said, noting that her daughter is a St. Mary’s Bay View Academy student.

“I’m sure it had an effect!” said Ms. Holland McDuff, also a St. Mary’s Bay View Academy graduate.
