05/25/06 Foster Care Volunteer "Champion for Children"

Businesswoman Deedra Durocher, who took photos of foster children with their foster families to provide a permanent record of their time together, is the 2006 "Champion for Children." The annual award is given by the Washington County Coalition for Children.

Family Service of Rhode Island is a member of the coalition, and Ms. Durocher was nominated for the award by Pamela Watson, the agency's chief operating officer.   She described Ms. Durocher as "a businesswoman by profession, but a social worker by heart."

She and her husband owned and operated Kingstown Camera in Wakefield for over 20 years.  During that time, she often took photographs of foster children and their foster families so that, no matter what happened in the future, the children and foster parents would have a lasting memory of their time together.

The Washington County Coalition for Children is composed of organizations that provide services to the state's southern region as well as interested community members.  The coalition's mission is to be a voice that advocates for the health and well-being of children and families in Washington County.

Family Service of Rhode Island has an office located at 650 Ten Rod Road in North Kingstown.
