Before a huge crowd at the Rhode Island Convention Center on Tuesday, October 23, Providence Mayor David Cicilline received the 2007 Brighter Futures Award from Family Service of RI.  The mayor received the recognition for his leadership in building brighter futures for children.

Mayor Cicilline spearheaded the creation of AfterZones, a citywide, neighborhood-based system of quality afterschool programming in Providence, for which he received an award from the National League of Cities' After School Alliance.  In addition, Mayor Cicilline has been a champion of Family Service of RI's collaboration with the Providence Police, the Police Go Team, designed to give counseling and support to children and other victims of violence, as well as to intervene before violence explodes by reaching out to people "on the beat."

The Brighter Futures Award luncheon, a major fundraising event for the agency, raised approximately $165,000 (gross), about $15,000 higher than the set goal.   Event co-chair Michael Ryan, of National Grid, announced this during the event's speaking program, which also included remarks from Lisa Churchville, of WJAR NBC 10, who served as event co-chair; Malcolm Farmer, III, of Hinckley, Allen & Snyder, president of the Family Service of RI board of directors; Family Service of RI CEO Margaret Holland McDuff; and the mayor.

Patrice Wood, above, of NBC 10 WJAR, served as emcee.

In addition, the Family Service of RI video was shown on two large screens, as was a video about Mayor Cicilline produced by NBC 10 WJAR.
