08/26/09 AIDS Walk Returns to Downtown Providence
AIDS Project RI’s signature event, AIDS WALK RI, will take place in the fall this year and at a newer higher profile location.
It’s Sunday, October 25, starting and ending at Roger Williams National Memorial, 282 North Main Street, in Providence. Registration is at 9 a.m. Formerly the event was held in June at Roger Williams Park in Providence, although for years downtown was the location.
“We want to involve the university community in this event to foster understanding about the facts about HIV/AIDS,” said Margaret Holland McDuff, CEO of Family Service of RI, of which AIDS Project RI is a division. “We keep hearing time and again that young people don’t appreciate that the threat is very real. We hope this new location and new time of year will make it easier for the city’s and state’s college students to participate. We want to raise awareness.”
The walk will be 5 kilometers (about 3 miles) and will take place rain or shine. For more information or to create or join a walk team, visit www.aidsprojectri.org.
“We’d like to thank Cardi’s Furniture for being the event’s lead sponsor, continuing their strong support of the work of AIDS Project RI,” she said.
AIDS Project RI merged with Family Service of RI in 2008.
